About product

1:144 Hawker Tempest Mk.V flaps — a Brengun photo-etched accessory

A set of photo-etched parts of thin metal intended to refine the landing flaps on a kit of the Hawker Tempest Mk.V fighter in 1:144 scale. It is an accessory, not a model in its own right — the base kit has to be at hand. The manufacturer is the Czech brand Brengun, which has long focused on small accessories for small scales. The benefit of photo-etching lies mainly in the thickness of the material: injection-molded plastic in 1:144 scale cannot shrink a flap or its ribbing down to a to-scale strength, whereas an etched sheet can.

The real subject

The Hawker Tempest Mk.V was a British single-engine fighter aircraft which came out of the Typhoon type but was given a new wing with a thinner profile and a reworked nose. It was powered by the Napier Sabre H-24 engine and the armament was made up of four 20 mm cannon in the wing. It entered the fighting in 1944 and became famous for its high speed at low altitudes — it came into its own in chasing V-1 missiles and in support of ground units over northwestern Europe. The landing flaps are among the most conspicuous details on the lower surface of the wing, especially on an aircraft displayed in the parked position.

Usage tips

Separate the parts with a scalpel or a sharp knife on a hard surface, not by twisting — the metal ripples easily. Make the folds in a photo-etch bender, or between two steel jaws. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin in minute drops; on larger areas glue intended for photo-etching also helps. Before painting, degrease the metal and spray a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface. You will make the work easier with fine-tipped tweezers and good lighting.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build the Tempest Mk.V in 1:144 scale and want to move the detail beyond the level of the box
  • More experienced builders with basic practice in working with photo-etching
  • Collectors of small scales who are bothered by oversized plastic surfaces
  • Those who want to build the aircraft in the parked configuration with more pronounced wing details

It is an accessory to a kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a photo-etched accessory that replaces some of the parts on a Tempest kit in 1:144 scale that you have already bought. The aircraft itself is not in the package.

Photo-etched sets tend to be cut for a particular kit. Before you buy, please check that the set matches the kit you are building.

A scalpel or sharp knife, fine tweezers, a hard surface, cyanoacrylate glue and ideally a photo-etch bender. Before painting, a primer for metal comes in handy.

Photo-etching in 1:144 scale is small and calls for patience. If you have not worked with photo-etching before, reckon with the first parts possibly flying off or rippling.
