About product

1:144 MD-80 - resin landing flaps in the landing position from the maker LACI

A detail set in 1:144 scale for the MD-80 series airliner. The resin castings replace the rear part of the wing so that the landing flaps can be built extended, including the mechanism and the leading edges of the flap tracks, which are visible in this configuration. This is not a kit of the aircraft but a conversion accessory for a part-built model.

Why extended flaps

An airliner with a smooth, cleanly faired wing looks static as a model. Flaps extended into the landing position, by contrast, put the whole model in motion and reveal the complex structure of the trailing edge that is otherwise hidden. On the MD-80 series with its narrow fuselage and rear-mounted engines this is one of the few modifications that really has a large effect on the final impression. The set makes sense above all when you are building the aircraft with the landing gear down, that is on approach or shortly after takeoff; on a model in cruise configuration extended flaps would be factually wrong.

Building and painting tips

Wash the resin in warm water with detergent so that the mold release agent disappears. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw; with thin flaps in this scale work carefully, as the parts are fragile. The original trailing edge has to be cut off the plastic wing. Scribe a line first and cut rather less, since it can be fine-tuned by sanding. Dry-fit and watch both the angle of extension and the symmetry of the flaps on both wings. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Painting is easier before fitting: the lower surfaces of the flaps and the tracks tend to be in a different shade from the skin of the wing, so it pays to spray them separately and glue them only at the end.

Who the set is for

  • builders of airliner models in 1:144 scale
  • modelers who want the aircraft in the landing configuration
  • more experienced modelers used to cutting into a plastic wing and working with resin
  • those who build the model on a stand in a flying pose

The set is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Before buying, check that the set matches the kit you are building.

FAQ

It is not. It is a resin accessory that replaces the trailing edge of the wing. The base MD-80 kit has to be bought separately.

Yes. The original trailing edge has to be cut off and the surface sanded. The set is therefore intended rather for more experienced modelers.

On approach to landing and on takeoff, that is on a model with the landing gear down. An aircraft in cruise has its flaps retracted.
