About product

Vacuum-formed canopy for the Me-309 in 1:144 scale

With glazed parts it is the wall thickness that decides. Injection-molded plastic has a technological minimum it cannot go below, whereas vacuum-formed film is drawn over a mold and comes out noticeably thinner. In 1:144 scale that means sharper frames, less optical distortion and a cockpit you can really see into. The accessory comes from the manufacturer Brengun and is intended for the kit of the Me-309 aircraft in this scale. The number of pieces in the package is stated on the box.

The real subject

The Me-309 was a German experimental fighter of the Second World War. Only a few prototypes were built and the design never reached series production. It was an all-metal single-seat monoplane; unusual on it was the retractable tricycle landing gear. The canopy is fairly low and blends smoothly into the spine of the fuselage, so thinner material tells on it markedly.

How to work with a vacuum-formed canopy

Forget pliers and a cutter. The part is sanded free from the film, not cut: first trace the outline with a fine alcohol marker, then lay the film on fine abrasive paper on a flat board and remove the excess in a circular motion until you reach the parting line. Proceed slowly and turn the part, so that the edge is sanded evenly all round; if you go too far a hole appears and the part is unusable. For gluing, use a cement that dries perfectly clear — PVA canopy glue or white glass glue. Super glue is out of the question, as its fumes fog clear material permanently. Before gluing, dip the canopy in a polish for glazed parts and let it drip freely, and do not dry it with a cloth. Mask the frames with thin strips of tape or with liquid mask and paint in two coats — the interior shade first, then the exterior camouflage.

Who the accessory is for

  • Collectors of aircraft and prototypes in 1:144 scale
  • Modelers who want a thinner and cleaner canopy
  • Those who build a model with an open cockpit
  • More experienced modelers who can manage sanding vacuum-formed parts

It is a detail accessory, not a model of an aircraft. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package. Check that it matches your own kit.

FAQ

Thin film deforms or cracks under a cut. The right procedure is to trace the outline and sand the excess away on fine abrasive paper right down to the parting line.

One that dries perfectly clear — PVA canopy glue or white glass glue. Super glue fogs clear material.

A smaller wall thickness. In 1:144 scale that means finer frames and a better view into the interior.

It is not. It is a separate glazed accessory. The kit of the aircraft has to be bought separately and checked for a match.
