About product

Rolls-Royce BR715 for the Boeing 717, 1:144 scale

A resin engine nacelle set that on a Boeing 717 model replaces the plastic parts from the base kit. This is a detail accessory for 1:144 scale, not a model of the aircraft. The number of pieces in the package is stated on the box; the Boeing 717 carries two engines.

The real subject

The BR715 is a turbofan engine from the BR700 family, which Rolls-Royce developed as a new generation of powerplants in the medium thrust class. On the Boeing 717 it is the only installation of this type, and compared with the engines carried by the older DC-9 and MD-80 it is conspicuously different: it has a markedly larger fan diameter, a shorter and fuller cowling and a differently shaped rear section with thrust reversers. The nacelles are not slung under the wing but on short pylons on the sides of the rear fuselage, so when building the model it is above all the angle and symmetry of seating that decide, not the position relative to the wing.

Installation and painting tips

Wash the castings free of the mold release agent and cut off the casting blocks, which usually run across the surface that the pylon will cover anyway. Either keep the pylon from the base kit or shorten it so that the nacelle seats on its whole mating surface, otherwise the joint cracks once dry. Before gluing, dry-fit both nacelles and look at the model from above and from behind: both must make the same angle with the axis of the fuselage. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue; on larger parts a glue with a longer setting time or epoxy comes in handy so that you have time to fine-tune the position. Paint the intake and the inside of the cowling before you glue the nacelle on, because afterwards a brush will not reach in there. A smooth glossy base suits the cowling, because airline liveries are often bold and polished on the nacelles.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Boeing 717 in 1:144 scale who are not satisfied with the shape of the plastic nacelles
  • Modelers who build several machines of the DC-9 family and want to tell them apart by engine
  • More experienced builders with experience of resin
  • Collections of civil aircraft where the fidelity of the engine shapes is judged

The set is supplied as a resin accessory, unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The number of pieces is stated on the box. The Boeing 717 has two engines, so two nacelles are needed for a complete model.

It is a newer turbofan of the BR700 family with a substantially larger fan diameter and a differently shaped cowling. The shape of the nacelle is therefore visibly different.

It depends on how the set is made. The pylon as a rule stays from the plastic kit; only the mating surface is adjusted so that the nacelle seats on its whole surface.

Symmetry. Both nacelles must make the same angle with the axis of the fuselage, otherwise the model is plainly crooked seen from above.
