About product

Carpets for a diorama, the fourth part

This printed sheet from the manufacturer ETA diorama extends the range of paper carpets for building interior scenes. The name states 1:16, 1:24 and 1:35 scale, so the sheet is not tied to a single one of them — the modeler checks the usability of a given pattern by laying it against the figure or the furniture he wants to combine it with. The sheet is therefore not tied to a single fixed scale.

A carpet as a tool of composition

A carpet in a scene does more than fill the floor. Its shape and angle lead the viewer's eye to the main element, separate parts of a room and balance an otherwise muted interior in color. A patterned carpet is at the same time a strong touch of color, so it pays to choose one that does not drown out the figures. For a smaller scene a more muted rendering rather, for a formal interior a bolder one.

Gluing and a natural shape

Glue with a thin continuous layer of PVA glue, applied to the base rather than to the paper. For the impression of a loosely laid textile, leave one corner unglued and lift it slightly, or crumple the paper in your hand before gluing and smooth it out again — the fine texture that results resembles the waving of fabric. At the transition to a wall, let the carpet end a little short of it, so that the floor shows; a perfect fit looks artificial.

Wear and the final flattening

Uneven wear adds believability. Darken the most walked-over places with a muted wash or, on the contrary, mute them with dry pastel, dust the edges with pigment and suggest a deposit of dust in the corners. Avoid a continuous layer of dirt over the whole area — the contrast between a well-preserved middle and scuffed edges is more convincing. Matte clear coat at the end unifies and protects the surface.

Who the sheet is for

  • Builders of interior dioramas, vignettes and cutaways of buildings.
  • Modelers of figures in larger scales.
  • Anyone interested in the composition of a scene with a touch of color.
  • Collectors of the range of paper accessories for interiors.

It is a printed paper accessory for a diorama. Glue, paints and other material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The name states 1:16, 1:24 and 1:35. Lay the pattern against a figure or furniture and judge whether the size of the pattern matches the scene.

Leave one corner unglued and lift it slightly. The paper can be crumpled before gluing and smoothed out again, which gives it fine waving.

Darken the walked-over places with a muted wash, dust the edges with pigment and keep the contrast between a well-preserved middle and scuffed edges.

The make-up of the patterns is determined by the manufacturer of the sheet. Once unpacked, lay the carpets out according to the actual printing and only then cut.
