A plastic kit of the Pz.Kpfw.I light tank in the Ausf.B version fitted with a laying device for a demolition charge, in the unusually large 1:16 scale. The maker is Takom. The large scale means bigger parts, better access to the detail and a finished model that looks completely different in a display case from an ordinary 1:35; at the same time, though, it shows unfinished joints and haste in painting mercilessly.
The Pz.Kpfw.I Ausf.B was a light tank of the second half of the 1930s with a two-man crew and machine gun armament in a rotating turret. Compared with the Ausf.A version it had a longer hull, a more powerful engine and running gear with one extra road wheel. In design terms it was a simple, lightly armored machine which quickly proved obsolete in the role of a combat tank, and the hulls were therefore used for derived and special versions. The designation mit Abwurfvorrichtung refers to the engineer modification with a frame structure at the rear from which a demolition charge could be laid without the crew leaving the vehicle.
In a large scale it pays to work in subassemblies: first the running gear and the inner surfaces of the hull, and only then close the box up, otherwise you will no longer reach the joints. Glue the joints on large surfaces with liquid cement for plastic, by capillary action once the parts are together, then fill and sand the seams. Paint the tracks and the running gear separately from the hull and fit them only after the base coat. Use a primer before painting, as it unifies the surface and reveals unfinished gaps. Build the weathering in layers: a unifying filter, a dark wash in the recesses, a dry brush on the edges and finally pigments for mud and dust effects on the lower part and the running gear. In a large scale, make sure the effects are not coarse, as the scale magnifies them.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
