Ship railings with chain infill, 1:200

A set of photo-etched ship railings in which chains are strung between the stanchions instead of the usual ropes or bars. It is not a model but an accessory. Railings are one of the most conspicuous features on a ship model, and a plastic part can manage only a crude suggestion of them, because a mold will not make a fine grid. Photo-etch gives the right thickness and spacing.

What it is for

• Adding railings around the decks and superstructures.
• Replacing the simplified plastic part from the kit.
• Railings in places where the kit has none at all.
• Raising the detail of a silhouette seen against the light.

Building and painting tips

Fit the railings at the very end, or you will keep catching on them during the build. Cut the parts from the fret with a sharp blade on a hard surface; do not snap them off. Make the bends over a metal edge. They are glued with a minute amount of super glue applied on the tip of a toothpick. Degrease the parts before painting and lay down a primer. Paint the railings while they are still on the fret or off the model, because on a finished model they are hard to reach.
