A pair of sheets with a wood grain for American cars with wooden bodywork in 1:24 and 1:25 scale. One sheet carries a mixture of patterns, the other regular planking.
Responsibility details are not available.
A station wagon with wooden side panels was an ordinary shape for a family car in the United States from the 1930s to the 1950s. The door frames and the sides were built of hardwood and filled with plywood panels, so that the car looked more like furniture on wheels. It is exactly this look that is hardest to paint on a model, because the grain of wood on a car has a different density than on aircraft.
The set therefore holds two sheets. The first mixes several kinds of wood, from a fine grain to coarser growth rings, so irregular areas and panel fills are taken from it. The second brings regular planking, which suits the sides, the door frames and the horizontal bands. The combination of the two makes it possible to set the frame apart from the fill without mixing anything with a brush.
The patterns are designed for 1:24 and 1:25 scale and for larger models. They can also be used on furniture and small equipment in 1:35 scale, where the grain comes across as suitably generous. Anyone building a diorama with an interior will appreciate that floors and walls can be covered with one and the same material.
A smooth gloss base is ideal; a matte surface holds air and the film goes dull on it. Once it is seated, a decal softener helps the grain to follow the edges and the pressings, and a protective varnish follows once it has dried. The surplus edges are trimmed with a sharp point only at the end.
Imitating growth rings by hand means layering glaze, oil and drybrushing and starting over on every area. A printed sheet, by contrast, gives the same result on the left and right sides of the car and saves trying shades out on offcuts.
