About product

Aoshima 1:24 Mazdaspeed PG6SA AZ-1 (1992)

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:24 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Aoshima. It covers a kei class car with the factory chassis designation PG6SA, that is the AZ-1, and in the version fitted with body parts from the Mazdaspeed sports division. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, with decals and instructions.

The real subject

The AZ-1 is among the most unusual Japanese cars of its day. It is a two-seat kei class microcar with a mid-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive and above all with upward-opening doors, which on a car this small look completely unexpected. The body is very low and short, the overall length matching the kei class limits of the time, as does the capacity of the three-cylinder turbocharged engine of up to 660 cubic centimeters. The sports version with Mazdaspeed parts added body features and a different design of wheel. Thanks to its low weight and mid-mounted engine the car still has a cult reputation among followers of Japanese car culture.

Building and painting tips

A small car means small parts — work with a sharp knife and tweezers and try the joints dry. Treat the body with primer before painting and apply the gloss paint in thin coats; on such a compact surface every unevenness shows. The upward-opening doors call for care when gluing the hinges, if you want to keep them in the open position. Finish the interior and the chassis separately. Mask the clear parts and glue them with canopy glue. Apply the fine lettering and markings onto a gloss surface and settle them with a softener, then unify the whole model at the end with a varnish to the degree of gloss you want.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of Japanese kei class cars
  • modelers looking for an unconventional subject among the usual sports cars
  • builders with a feel for small parts and fine detail
  • fans of the Japanese car scene of the 1990s

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
