A resin accessory for dioramas and vignettes in 1:24 scale from AK interactive. It captures a street pay phone with its handset, instrument cabinet and the side panels of the housing. It is not a vehicle kit but a piece of setting for models of cars, gas pumps and street corners. Small things like this anchor a scene in time better than the best base ever could: a pay phone on the sidewalk moves a diorama into the era before cell phones without a word of commentary.
Coin-operated pay phones were an ordinary part of American streets from the middle of the last century until the start of the new millennium. They stood outside stores, motels and gas stations, alone on a post or in partly enclosed booths. The typical features are a metal body, a dial, a coin slot and a handset on an armored cord. The versions differed by telephone company, but they shared a tough finish that gradually faded and rubbed away where hands touched it.
Start by washing the resin castings in lukewarm soapy water, because otherwise the mold release agent will keep the paint from taking. Cut the casting blocks away with a fine saw or a cutter, and never snap them off. Sand wet and with respiratory protection, as resin dust does not belong in your lungs. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), since ordinary cement for plastic does nothing here. Lay down a primer before painting, and then ordinary modeling acrylics will do. What makes it convincing is the weathering: a dark wash into the recesses, light chipping on the edges and dust pigment around the base of the part.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, a base and figures are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
