This plastic kit from the Italian manufacturer Italeri depicts the Volkswagen Golf GTI in first-series form, that is the cars built between 1976 and 1978. The 1:24 scale is the most widespread one for automobile models, so the finished car will fit into a collection alongside most of the kits commonly available. The box contains plastic parts on sprues, decals and instructions; the number of parts and the color schemes offered are given on the box.
The Golf GTI was created as the sporting version of the first-generation Golf designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. It went on sale in 1976 and became one of the cars that defined the category of small hatchbacks with a sporting character in Europe. It was powered by a spark-ignition four-cylinder engine with mechanical fuel injection, driving the front wheels. You can recognize the early cars by their one-piece bumpers, round main headlights, the black grille surround with a red stripe and the characteristic tartan upholstery. It is precisely this early specification that collectors want most today.
Build the body separately from the interior and the chassis. Before painting, wet-sand it with a very fine paper, degrease it and apply a filler primer; otherwise any unevenness will show through the gloss paint. A deep gloss comes from paint airbrushed in thin coats, if necessary with a clear gloss coat on top. Always lay the decals over a gloss surface and fix them with a decal softener. Chrome fittings and trim strips are best suggested with a chrome marker or a thin self-adhesive foil. Bond the glazing with a cement for clear plastic so that it does not fog. The interior comes to life with matte fabric shades, a dark wash in the recesses and light dry-brushing of the edges.
