This is a set of pre-cut masking pieces in kabuki paper for a model of the AH-1G attack helicopter in 1:32 scale, specifically for its late production form. It is neither a kit nor a replacement part — it is an aid for painting, which takes the place of laboriously cutting masking tape. New Ware grades its sets with the designations BASIC, ADVANCED and EXPERT according to extent; EXPERT is the highest level in that scheme, and a BASIC level set with a smaller extent is also made for the same helicopter and scale. Why masking matters on this subject

The AH-1G has a narrow fuselage and a tandem cockpit made up of largely flat glazed panels separated by thin frames. In 1:32 scale the panels are large, but the frames stay narrow and long — cutting tape for them by hand takes more time than the spraying itself, and every cut that wanders shows on the finished model. A pre-cut mask holds the width of the frame constant along its whole length and repeats around the whole cockpit with the same accuracy.

Usage tips

First wash the glazed parts and let them dry perfectly; on grease from fingers a mask will not hold reliably. Lift the shape off its backing with tweezers, seat it dry and only then press it down around its whole edge with a blunt toothpick — it is precisely the pressure on the edges that decides whether paint seeps under. Apply the paint in thin coats, as a single heavy one creates a ridge at the edge of the mask. Take the mask off while the finish is not yet fully cured, and at a slight angle, not straight upward.
