A decal sheet 1:32 for the Boeing B-17F with nose art and the markings of the 551st Bomb Squadron of the 385th Group, a unit operating from an airfield in eastern England.
Responsibility details are not available.
The paintings on the noses of American bombers were not just decoration. Crews used them to make a machine their own and to tell it apart from dozens of other olive fuselages on a muddy hardstand. This aircraft served with the 551st Squadron of the 385th Bomb Group, which from the middle of 1943 flew from the Great Ashfield airfield in Suffolk, and it took its name from the striking female figure painted behind the pilot's window. Version F, which the machine represents, is told from the later Fortresses by its glazed nose without a lower gun turret and by the slimmer shape of the nose.
The large color drawing is the most demanding part of the whole sheet, because it lies on a rounded area. It helps to cut it along a prominent line into two pieces and to lay them one after the other; the join is then hidden in the shading of the drawing. Use plenty of water so that you can still slide the film, and blot off the excess only at the moment when the position is right. Leave strong decal softener until the end, when the drawing is already where it should be. While the layer dries, leave the model alone and do not touch it; at that stage the film is as soft as wet paper and a fingerprint will be pressed into it permanently. Only on the second day does it make sense to deal with clear coat and weathering.
