About product

A decal sheet 1:32 B-24D Lemon Drop Assembly ship, HAD models

A printed decal sheet in 1:32 scale intended for a model of the bomber Consolidated B-24D in the form of a so-called assembly ship. Note that this is neither a model of an airplane nor a kit. It is a separate accessory for a kit already bought, and it holds decals only. The particular contents of the sheet and the number of schemes offered are given on the box of the set.

The real subject

The B-24 Liberator was a four-engined heavy bomber with a high-mounted wing of a high aspect ratio and a twin vertical tail. The D version is among the early production forms. Assembly ships, also called formation ships, were worn-out machines withdrawn from combat flights, lightened and repainted into conspicuous contrasting patterns, for example stripes, checkerboards or dots. Their task was to take off first, circle over the base and serve the other crews as a well-visible reference point by which the whole formation lined up in cloud and fog. As soon as the formation was assembled, the assembly ship returned and took no part in the combat flight. The machine carrying the name Lemon Drop was among these strikingly colored aircraft.

Application tips

Decals belong on a smooth gloss surface, or a silvery film will stay under them. So paint the model first and go over it with a gloss varnish. Cut the sheet close around the motif, soak it for a few seconds in lukewarm water and let it rest until the decal can be slid over the surface. Use a softener, so that the motif sucks down onto the scribed lines and the rivets; the large areas of the stripes and the numbers on the fuselage will call for it in particular. Once it has dried, wash the surface clean of adhesive residue and unify it with a matte or satin varnish.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building large American bombers in 1:32 scale.
  • Anyone interested in unconventional and conspicuous colorings.
  • Builders who want to set a model apart from the usual combat schemes.
  • Collectors of decal sheets for later use.

This is a separate decal sheet. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. This is purely a decal sheet. The kit has to be bought separately.

A worn-out machine withdrawn from combat flights and repainted into a conspicuous contrasting pattern. It served as a visible reference point by which a formation lined up in the air.

The number of schemes and the exact contents of the sheet are given on the box of the set.

Onto a smooth gloss varnish, after soaking in lukewarm water, with a softener. Finally unify the surface with a matte or satin varnish.
