The Boeing B-17F was an intermediate version of the four-engine Flying Fortress bomber, recognizable above all by the undivided glazed nose dome without the powered position with a pair of barrels, which only the following version G brought. The machines also differed from the later forms in details of the engine nacelles and the propellers. Paintings and inscriptions on the nose, such as The Mustang or Lady Luck, were applied right at the units and are the period decoration of particular aircraft.
The most common fault with large fuselage paintings is silvering, a milky cast around the drawing caused by air trapped under the carrier film. Prevention has three steps: a perfectly smooth gloss surface, enough water under the decal while seating it, and thorough expulsion of the air with a soft squeegee. If silvering appears all the same, pierce the area repeatedly with a very fine point and apply decal softener to it; it soaks in under the film and the milky cast usually disappears.
