A resin set from Metallic Details in 1:48 scale. It captures the SUU-14 underwing dispenser, which was used on light observation and reconnaissance aircraft, among them the Cessna O-2A. Armament and external stores on kits of light aircraft are usually worked out in rough outline only, so a separate resin casting makes a noticeable difference. It is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory for under the wing of a model that is already built.
The SUU-14 is an underwing dispenser made up of longitudinal tubes from which the contents, in the form of small submunitions, were released in flight. In design terms it is a simple and light unit that even machines with a limited load could carry, typically light observation aircraft. The Cessna O-2A Skymaster is the military version of the civil twin-engine Skymaster, with an unusual tandem arrangement of the engines ahead of and behind the cabin and with a twin-boom tail. It served for observation, reconnaissance and forward air control, and light stores on the wing pylons went with those tasks.
Wash the castings in warm water with detergent to free them of mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw or a cutter and level the surfaces with abrasive paper; with a long slender body take care that it stays straight. Sand wet and protect your airways. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Apply a primer before painting, then the base shade of the store and finally a light highlight on the edges and the mouths of the tubes. External stores on real machines were knocked about quickly, so discreet scuffing and traces of service look more convincing than a perfectly smooth finish. Before you glue it to the model, check the position of the pylon and the symmetry of both sides.
This is a detail accessory, not a stand-alone model. The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted; the kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
