Decals 1:32 for the Boeing B-17F in the finish of the machine that was the first bomber of the Eighth Air Force to complete its fiftieth combat mission. The raid from the fall of 1943, Molesworth base.
Responsibility details are not available.
When this aircraft landed on the grass surface at Molesworth in November 1943, it had fifty combat missions to its credit and nobody in the whole Eighth Air Force was doing better. Four months later it added the seventy-fifth mission, again as the first. The machine belonged to the 359th Squadron of the 303rd Bomb Group, a unit that took its nickname from its best-known aircraft, and the milestone flight was led by Lieutenant John P. Manning. What is interesting is that this was the earlier version F, that is, a type that by then was already starting to be replaced by later machines with a chin turret. That is exactly why a model of this aircraft looks different on the shelf from the usual late Fortress.
Version F differs from the later machines in the shape of the nose, the placement of the windows and the armament. Before you fit the sheet, check that your kit matches exactly this variant, otherwise the lettering will fall beside the panel lines. Lay the mission symbols last so that they do not drift on you while you seat the larger areas, and measure the row out beforehand on a strip of paper. A useful habit is also to cut the sheet up into individual pieces of artwork in advance: scissors argue with wet paper and nobody makes an accurate cut then.
