About product

Italian WWII Fighter Pilot 1:32 — a resin Aerobonus figure

A figure cast in modeling resin in 1:32 scale, meant to complete an aircraft model, a diorama or a display case. It represents an Italian fighter pilot of the Second World War. This is neither an aircraft kit nor a finished model — you are buying a casting that you clean up and paint yourself. The contents of the package and the number of parts are stated on the packaging.

The casting and its preparation

Resin holds finer modeling than injection-molded plastic, above all on the face, the folds of the flight suit and the small equipment. Start with the casting by washing it in lukewarm water with detergent so that the mold release agent disappears from the surface; without that the paint will not hold and will flake off. On figures the casting block tends to sit on the base or on the heels, away from the visible side — cut it off with a fine saw or a new blade and sand the rest back. Never snap it off, as resin cracks unpredictably. Go over the mold seam, which usually runs along the sides of the figure, with a fine file and then with abrasive paper. Protect your breathing while sanding. Fill small bubbles and sand them back, and join the parts with cyanoacrylate glue.

Painting

A thin coat of primer comes first, so that paint holds on the smooth resin. The face and hands are best shaded from a mid flesh tone through a darker shadow in the recesses to a lighter touch on the nose, the cheekbones and the knuckles; oil paints allow slow blending here, acrylics quicker work. The clothing comes to life with a wash flowing into the folds and a dry brush on the edges, and leather parts will take a slightly higher sheen than textile. Leave the buckles, the straps and the small metal features for last and apply them with a fine brush. A final flat clear coat evens the whole figure out.

Who the figure is for

  • modelers building aircraft in 1:32 scale who want a human scale beside the machine
  • builders of dioramas and display case scenes
  • more experienced modelers used to resin and cyanoacrylate glue
  • anyone interested in painting figures with oils or acrylics

The figure is supplied unpainted and unassembled. Glue, paints and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is supplied as a resin casting in the color of the material; cleaning up, any gluing and painting are up to you.

A release agent from the mold stays on the surface. If it is not removed, primer and paint flake off once dry. Lukewarm water with detergent and a soft brush are enough.

With cyanoacrylate glue. Cement for plastic does not bite into resin, so the joint would not hold.

The number of parts is stated on the packaging. Figures in this scale tend to be cast in one piece or in a few parts.
