Masks for the Curtiss P-36A kit from the Special Hobby company. The set offers masking of the glazing outside and inside and two masks for the national marking.
In the second half of the thirties American military aircraft looked completely different from how they did during the war. The airframes stayed in polished metal or in a blue and yellow combination, the star inside the circle still had a red center and the rudder carried horizontal stripes in the national colors. To that the squadron colors on the engine cowling and numbers on the fuselage were added, so a machine's unit could be read from a distance. That whole colorful system ended shortly after the United States entered the war, when matte shades and inconspicuousness took priority. Anyone building a prewar machine is therefore aiming at marking considerably more colorful than on the later types.
The P-36A was the first production fighter with an all-metal skin and retractable landing gear that the army introduced in greater numbers. The later line with a V engine grew out of it in development. It became obsolete quickly in itself, but it served as a school for a whole generation of pilots.
On polished metal the edge of a marking is mercilessly visible, because it does not differ from the surrounding surface in texture. It therefore pays to smooth the base before masking and to apply the paint really thinly so that no step appears under the edge. With a matte finish the situation is milder; the grain of the surface absorbs a small unevenness by itself.
