Masking set for the Curtiss P-40E in 1:32 scale. It contains masks for the cockpit glazing from both faces and one national insignia mask.
Responsibility details are not available.
The American national markings were not constant during the Second World War, and that matters more for masking sets than it might seem. Until the spring of 1942 the white star in a blue circle still carried a red center field. That was removed because of confusion with the Japanese marking. In 1943 white bars were added at the sides of the circle, at first with a red border, a few weeks later with a blue one. Each of those forms has a different number of component shapes, and that is why the number of masks on the sheet differs between sets without meaning that any of them is the poorer.
British squadrons flew Kittyhawks over North Africa in a combination of Dark Earth and Middle Stone above with a blue underside. The pattern was hard-edged, because it was sprayed to templates, and large identification stripes were added to it. The surroundings dictated the colors: the stone shade imitated parched ground, the earth shade the shadows of rocky fields. Over the sea this finish was a liability instead, so aircraft operating along the coast were given a blue-gray overspray on the upper surfaces. One theater thus produced two different palettes for the same type.
The box deals with the glazing of the angular Curtiss cockpit from both faces and adds a mask for spraying the national insignia. It is precisely with insignia made up of several color fields that spraying is more accurate than a decal, because the individual colors lie in the plane of the surface and no step arises anywhere. Have the aircraft model and paints ready separately.
