Decals for a P-51B Mustang model

A sheet of decals in 1:32 scale for kits of the American P-51B Mustang fighter. In a large scale the markings are clearly legible and the sheet makes it possible to bring a model to the guise of a particular machine. Which machines the sheet covers and where the individual markings belong is given in the enclosed instructions.

The real subject

The P-51B is the earlier of the main wartime versions of the Mustang. It can be told from the later version with a bubble canopy at first glance: the cockpit has a framed canopy and the fuselage spine behind it stays high, so the view to the rear is limited. It was with this version that the Mustang became an escort fighter able to fly with bomber formations deep over the continent, because the combination of economical flight and auxiliary tanks gave it a range no single-engine fighter had reached until then.

Applying the decals

• give the surface under the decal a coat of gloss clear, as a matte surface makes a silvery veil under the film
• cut the marking out together with a piece of the backing and dip it in lukewarm water
• take it out before the film releases by itself and let it rest on a paper towel
• slide the film into place, press the water out from the middle toward the edges and let it dry
• over engraving and riveting, decal softener helps, as it draws the film into the recesses

Who the sheet is for

It suits a builder who has a P-51B model in a large scale under construction and wants to finish it in a finish other than the one the kit offers. Working with decals in 1:32 scale is rewarding: the films are larger, they are easier to handle and they are more easily lined up on the centerline.
