A set of turned metal barrels in 1:32 scale from the Polish maker Aber. It is not a model of an airplane but an accessory to a kit of the British Spitfire fighter. The package holds a pair of barrels for the 20 mm Hispano wing cannons. A metal barrel has the right cylindrical cross section, an open muzzle and it does not deform when the seams are sanded, which are the three most common weak points of plastic parts. The exact breakdown of the parts follows the contents of the particular package.
The 20 mm Hispano cannon was the standard British automatic aircraft weapon of the Second World War. On the Spitfire it appeared from the B wing onward and became the main armament on the later C and E wings, where it replaced some of the 7.7 mm machine guns. Against the earlier machine gun armament it offered markedly greater effect on target, in exchange for a smaller supply of ammunition. The long barrel projecting from the leading edge of the wing is in fact a characteristic recognition mark of the aircraft.
Fit the barrels only once the wing has been finished and sanded, or they risk being bent. Carefully redrill the hole in the leading edge if needed, so that the barrel sits on the axis and at the right length. Degrease the metal and go over it with a base coat (a primer); the barrel itself is usually left in a dark metallic tone with the muzzle gently picked out, while the gun fairings on the wing are matched to the camouflage scheme.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
