This kit from the Japanese maker Pit-Road in the 1:700 ship scale captures the Imperial Japanese Navy destroyer Shiratsuyu in her 1942 configuration. According to the name the lower hull parts are included, so the model can be finished as a full-hull build on a stand or as a waterline version set into the surface of a diorama. The complete contents of the package are stated on the box.
Shiratsuyu was the first ship of the destroyer class of the same name, which came about as an answer to the limits set by international naval treaties. The designers had to combine heavy armament with a smaller displacement, so the ships received 127 mm guns together with quadruple torpedo mounts for 610 mm torpedoes. Those quadruple mounts were new to this class and gave it considerable striking power in the night actions in which the Imperial Japanese Navy excelled. Shiratsuyu went through combat operations in the southwest Pacific, and the year 1942 in the name points to one of her most active periods.
Decide first between the full-hull and the waterline version, because the whole procedure follows from it. Separate the small parts of the superstructure, the masts and the torpedo mounts with a very sharp knife and clean up the edges with fine abrasive paper. Spray the hull and superstructure in a base gray, shade the wooden deck areas in a warmer tone and bring out the engraving with a dark wash. Bond fine structures made from etched parts, if you buy them separately, with super glue. The model looks good on a stand and in a small water scene alike, where the slender hull and the crowded stern come into their own.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
