About product

A US Navy tow bar in 1:32 scale

This resin accessory from the maker Brengun represents the tow bar used by US naval aviation for handling aircraft. In 1:32 scale it is a part that nobody in a scene will overlook, because it connects two elements together: the airplane and the tug. The package holds this accessory alone; neither the airplane nor the tug is part of it.

What a tow bar served for

An airplane was not moved across an apron or a deck under its own power unless it had to be. A tow bar was fitted between the nose landing gear and the tug, which transmitted the pull and at the same time kept a safe distance between the two machines. On the deck of an aircraft carrier aircraft were handled in a tight space, and precisely guided towing was the only way to line the machines up in a row. That is precisely why a tow bar is among the accessories that give a diorama action: a bar connected to the landing gear suggests that the machine is in the middle of being moved.

Building and painting

Before gluing, wash the casting in lukewarm water with dish soap and rid it of the residue of release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw, and never break them off. Sanding is to be done wet and with breathing protection. It is glued exclusively with super glue (cyanoacrylate). For painting use a base coat and then a shade matching the chosen scene; a metal bar looks good with more pronounced wear, because in reality it was a roughly used tool. Scuffing of the edges with a dry brush and a dark wash into the recesses will do most of the work.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of carrier deck and airfield dioramas in 1:32 scale
  • Modelers building American naval aircraft
  • Anyone interested in ground equipment that gives a scene movement and action
  • Modelers with experience of resin parts

The set is an accessory, not a model in its own right. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. The package holds only the tow bar. Both the airplane and any tug have to be obtained separately.

It joined the nose landing gear of an airplane to a tug during moves across an apron or a deck and kept a safe distance between the two machines.

With super glue, that is cyanoacrylate. Cement for plastic will not join resin.

After the base coat apply the chosen shade, add a dark wash into the recesses and use a dry brush to suggest scuffing of the edges and of the places where the bar was held.
