About product

76.2 mm Pak 36(r) barrel for the Marder III (Sd.Kfz. 139), 1:35 scale

This set from Aber is a turned metal accessory made to replace the plastic barrel of the main weapon on a model of the Marder III tank destroyer in the Sd.Kfz. 139 version. It is not a vehicle model or a kit but a part fitted into a kit built elsewhere in 1:35 scale.

The real subject

The Sd.Kfz. 139 came about by mounting a 76.2 mm gun, reworked from a captured Soviet divisional weapon, on the chassis of the light Panzer 38(t) tank. In German service the weapon was listed as the 7.62 cm Pak 36(r) and received a muzzle brake and a modified chamber. The open fighting superstructure and the long slender barrel are among the most conspicuous features of the whole design, so it is the barrel above all that decides how a finished model looks.

What the metal part offers over the plastic one

A plastic barrel is usually molded in two halves. The lengthwise seam has to be sanded away, and in the process the circular cross-section and the fine steps of the surface are easily lost. A turned metal part is in one piece, concentric, and has a sharply cut muzzle with an open bore, which cannot be done in injection-molded plastic. On a long slender shape metal does not bend or twist, which shows at a glance on a barrel of this type. You will notice the greater weight of the part when handling it, and it is worth allowing for when gluing.

Fitting and painting

Cut the original plastic barrel off and clean up the mating surface. Test-fit the metal part dry first, and only then glue it with cyanoacrylate glue, ideally a gel, which gives you time to line the axis up. Degrease the metal before painting and use a primer suitable for metal, otherwise the shade rubs off the edges. Keep the bore opening clean and handle the shadow inside it with a dark shade, never with filler.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building Second World War vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • builders bothered by the seam and the blunt muzzle of a plastic barrel
  • more experienced modelers used to working with metal and cyanoacrylate glue

The accessory is supplied unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a separate replacement barrel for a model you already have. The base kit has to be bought separately.

Plastic cement does not hold on metal. Use cyanoacrylate glue, ideally a gel, which lets you line the barrel up along its axis before it sets.

Yes. Degrease the part and spray it with a primer suitable for metal. Without primer the paint rubs off metal easily.

A specific list of compatible kits is not stated here. Before buying, check that your kit matches the Sd.Kfz. 139 version and test-fit the part dry.
