A turned metal barrel in 1:35 scale from the Polish manufacturer Aber. It represents the barrel of the Soviet 12.7 mm DShK heavy machine gun in the wartime form, that is, in the shape used during the Second World War on heavy tanks and self-propelled guns such as the IS-2, the IS-3 or the ISU-152. This is not a model of a weapon but a detail accessory: the metal barrel replaces a small plastic part that as a rule lacks both straightness and a hollow muzzle.
The DShK was a Soviet heavy machine gun of 12.7 mm introduced in the 1930s. On armored vehicles it told mainly as an anti-aircraft weapon placed on a ring or a swinging mount on the roof of the turret; it served the crew against unprotected targets as well. The wartime form differs from the postwar modernized version among other things in the shape of the barrel cooling and the muzzle end, so choosing the right variant makes sense on a model. The weapon stayed in the armament of many armies for whole decades afterward.
Cut off the plastic barrel at the root, clean out the opening in the mantlet or the shield and push the metal part home. Degrease the metal with alcohol before gluing and roughen the mating surfaces lightly; it is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Lay a base coat meant for metals onto the metal parts, or the paint will hold poorly. The hollow muzzle stands out when you darken it lightly from inside with a soot shade. A machine gun barrel is a small part: work over a tray so that it does not get lost, and dose the glue on the tip of a piece of wire. Once painted, polish the barrel gently with graphite so that it comes across as worn metal.
This is a detail accessory, not a complete model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
