This item is not a tank model but a single precisely machined part – the barrel of the main armament, which during the build replaces the plastic part from the box. It is made by the Polish brand Aber, whose specialty is turned gun barrels and fine metal accessories in 1:35 scale. The part is intended for the British FV214 heavy tank in the version with additional armor, known as the Super Conqueror.
The FV214 Conqueror was a British heavy tank of the 1950s armed with a rifled 120 mm L1A1 gun. The weapon had a one-piece long barrel with a fume extractor, and its task was clear: to carry heavy armor-piercing ammunition over a great distance. The Super Conqueror variant came about by adding add-on armor plates to the hull and the turret. Given the length of the barrel, this part forms a prominent share of the silhouette of a finished model.
A long plastic barrel is made of halves, so it carries a parting seam along its whole length, and sanding it down easily loses the round cross-section. Longer plastic parts moreover tend to bow slightly. Turned metal holds its shape, has no seam and its muzzle is usually drilled out, so that seen from the front it does not look closed.
Cut the original barrel off where it joins the turret or the mantlet, level the surface and check the axis with a dry test – the fit has to be exactly horizontal, or the model is visibly crooked. Bond with cyanoacrylate glue or with epoxy. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a primer for metal; only then apply the covering shade. It pays to shade the fume extractor and the muzzle end a little darker, so that the volume of the barrel stands out.
