Let us be honest: of this whole group the pallet is the item an experienced modeler really will make himself. Cutting strips from veneer or from thin profile and gluing them into a grid is an hour's work and the material is easy to come by.
And yet a finished piece has its reasons. The first is thickness. Hand cutting gives boards that are not alike and a difference of a tenth of a millimeter is visible at this scale as a wave. The second is the spacing: regular gaps between the boards take longer to mark out than one thinks. The third is the time which, instead of two hours of cutting, you spend on what really adds to a diorama, that is, on the surface and the coloring.
The package makes one pallet out of four parts. Anyone who needs a store full of pallets should really make them. Anyone who needs one or two in the foreground, where they will be seen close up, reaches for a finished piece and saves himself the trouble of getting them flat.
A pallet is rewarding precisely in its surface. The wood can be toned with glazes into several shades, the boards dirtied at the edges and polished away to nothing in the places a cart ran over them. It is this work that turns a simple grid into an object with several years of use behind it, and it is done just as well on a hand-glued pallet as on a bought one.
The decision therefore reads: buy a piece for what will be seen and make the rest. This approach saves time and effort at the same time, and with pallets it holds more clearly than with anything else in the diorama range, because it is the simplest shape to be found in it.
