A turned metal accessory in 1:35 scale from the Polish manufacturer Aber. It replaces the plastic barrel of the German 105 mm leFH 18 howitzer with a barrel 28 calibers long, as it was installed in the StuH 42 assault gun in the late production Ausf.G version. It is a separate part for finishing a model, not a kit of the vehicle. The exact number of components in the package and the list of compatible kits are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
A plastic barrel is molded in two halves, so a parting line remains along its length and the muzzle is usually solid. Filling and sanding a cylindrical surface is tedious and easily disturbs the circular cross-section. Turned metal is one piece, precisely cylindrical and with a drilled muzzle; on a short howitzer barrel with a pronounced muzzle end the clean shape shows at once. The late version of the StuH 42 differs from the earlier ones among other things in the execution of the muzzle section, which is why the barrels are offered in several variants.
Degrease the metal with alcohol and apply a base coat for metal surfaces, otherwise the paint will come off during handling. Fit the barrel only after the shield and the front of the superstructure are painted, so that you can reach around the mounting with a brush. If the play in the mounting allows elevation, fix the angle with cyanoacrylate glue only in the position you want on the finished model. Cover the transition between metal and plastic with a thin layer of filler and sand it so that the joint is not visible. Apply soot effects at the muzzle sparingly, otherwise they will suppress the clean line of the turned part.
This is a detail accessory for building a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
