About product

Aber 1:35 grilles for the Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. L Luchs tank (a photo-etched set)

This is not a model of a vehicle but a detail accessory. The photo-etched set replaces the grilles of the cooling openings on the engine deck of a plastic kit of the reconnaissance tank Luchs in 1:35 scale. Plastic grilles tend to be molded as a solid surface with a suggested pattern, so they look thick and opaque. Photo-etched metal has a thickness matching the scale and a genuine see-through effect, which stands out even more on a small vehicle than on large tanks. The manufacturer is the Polish firm Aber, a long-standing specialist in photo-etched and turned metal accessories.

The real subject

The Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. L Luchs, with the ordnance designation Sd.Kfz. 123, was a German light reconnaissance tank of the Second World War derived from the Pz.Kpfw. II family. It had a low silhouette, an open-topped turret with a 20 mm cannon and a coaxial machine gun, and it was designed for fast movement and reconnaissance ahead of the main units. It was built in limited numbers and served, among other places, with reconnaissance detachments on both the Eastern and the Western Front. The small dimensions of the vehicle mean that every detail of the engine deck is clearly visible on a model.

Building and painting tips

Sand or cut away the plastic grilles and clean up the openings so that the photo-etched part seats flush. Separate the parts with a scalpel and make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue in drops along the edges, so that the pattern does not get clogged. Degrease the photo-etched parts before painting and spray them with a primer for metal. The engine deck is a rewarding place for a dark wash and dust pigments, and on a reconnaissance vehicle traces of mud and a sprayed camouflage suit it as well.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building a Luchs in 1:35 scale
  • Enthusiasts of a faithful look to the engine deck
  • Modelers who dislike opaque plastic grilles
  • More advanced builders with experience of photo-etched parts

The accessory is supplied as a photo-etched set, unpainted. A base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A German light reconnaissance tank of the Second World War, the Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. L with the designation Sd.Kfz. 123, armed with a 20 mm cannon and a machine gun.

It is not. This is a photo-etched set of grilles that is fitted to a plastic kit of the Luchs in 1:35 scale.

Yes, the original grilles are usually sanded or cut away and the openings cleaned up so that the photo-etched part seats flush with the deck.

It is on a small vehicle that the difference stands out most. A solid plastic surface next to a genuinely see-through grille looks crude.
