About product

Husky Mk. III VMMD with interrogation arm in 1:35 scale from AFV Club

The kit captures the specialized engineer vehicle Husky Mk. III in the VMMD configuration, that is the carrier of a mine detector, with an interrogation arm added. It is the arm that sets this version apart from the basic one: from a safe distance the crew uses it to check the spot the detector flagged, without having to step out. The exact contents of the package are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

The real subject

The Husky is a light wheeled vehicle built to find improvised and explosive devices on roads. Its design follows a single principle: the crew must survive a blast underneath. That is why it has a shaped hull bottom that deflects the pressure wave, separate wheel units that tear away in an explosion, and a low overall weight so that the vehicle sets off as few charges as possible. The detection panels carried ahead of and behind the vehicle work on ground-penetrating radar and magnetic search; the type served mainly in route clearance in Iraq and Afghanistan, where it usually travels in a column with other engineer vehicles.

Building and painting tips

Concentrate on the running gear and the detection panels — work on them and spray them before you attach them to the vehicle, because you will not reach them later. The arm rewards you if you leave it swung out to the side, which gives the model a story. The articulated joints and the hydraulics come out well if you bring them up with a dark wash. Build the basic sand or light brown shade on a lighter modulation of the upper surfaces, then load the underside and the wheels with dust pigments. Keep in mind that a vehicle of this type works on dusty roads, so a continuous layer of fine dust suits it better than heavy mud splatter.

Who the model is for

  • Builders of modern engineer and mine-protected vehicles.
  • Modelers who want a vehicle outside the usual run of tanks and carriers in the display case.
  • Anyone interested in columns and dioramas on a route clearance theme.
  • Modelers who enjoy working with dust pigments.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
