About product

Quickwheel 1:35 IDF Achzarit (late) — road wheel masks for the Meng kit

A masking set for painting the road wheels of the Israeli Achzarit heavy armored personnel carrier in its late version, 1:35 scale. It is not a model or an extra part: the masks stick onto finished wheels and separate the rubber tire band from the rim while spraying. The set is cut for the Achzarit kit in the late form from Meng.

What makes the running gear of the Achzarit special

The Achzarit was created by rebuilding the chassis of the T-54 and T-55 tanks, and that is exactly where its running gear comes from: large road wheels with pronounced rubber tire bands, arranged in five positions on each side, with no return rollers. The uneven spacing is characteristic — between the first and the second wheel a strikingly larger gap is left than between the rest, so the wheels do not sit in a regular rhythm and it is easy to lose track of the positions when masking. The wheels are large in diameter and their rim has a broken relief that invites careful painting, because it is clearly visible on a finished model even under the side plates. On the late form the running gear is also harder to get to once the hull is assembled, so it pays to paint the wheels before you fit them to the model.

Choosing and preparing the paint

Achzarits serve in a dusty environment and their rubber never stays richly dark. Choose a shade somewhat lighter than would seem right, therefore — a dark gray base lightened with a drop of sand or gray-beige looks more convincing than black, especially on a tire band as large as this subject has. Thin the paint more than for covered surfaces before spraying and work at low pressure: thick paint would gather at the edge of the mask and on a large diameter the step would be visible all the way around. Two or three thin coats are enough; apply the last only to even the tone out. Finish matte; any shine would turn a large wheel into a rubber disc fresh from the press.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of Israeli armored equipment in 1:35 scale
  • Builders who want a perfectly even rim-to-rubber transition on large wheels
  • Those who work with an airbrush and want to save the time of lining by hand
  • Anyone interested in chassis derived from the T-54 and T-55 family

This is a masking set, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A masking set for painting the road wheels. The model, the paints and the glue are not part of it.

This item is intended for the late form of the Achzarit as treated by Meng. If you are building a different version or a kit from another brand, check the wheel diameter beforehand.

A lighter dark gray rather than black. Dust from service lightens the rubber and on the large tire band of an Achzarit a lightened tone looks more natural.

It pays to do it before fitting them to the hull. The running gear is harder to reach once assembled, and masking calls for access to the wheel from every side.
