The real subject

Water jerrycans are permanent equipment on vehicles operating in a hot, dry environment. On Israeli vehicles they are carried in storage racks, lashed to the hull grab handles and stacked around the crew compartment. They tend to be of various ages and various degrees of wear, which is useful for a modeler - it gives room to distinguish the individual pieces in color and texture.

Building and painting tips

The key to a durable finish is preparing the surface. First wash the castings in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent using a soft brush, to remove any residue of mold release agent - paint does not hold on a greasy surface and in time flakes off the edges. Once they are thoroughly dry, apply a thin coat of primer; it will at the same time reveal any bubbles or underfilled spots, which can then easily be made good with putty. Only then apply the color. Go easy on the coats - a jerrycan has fine pressed-in ribs and lettering that a heavy coat of paint floods. Finish with a wash into the recesses, fine chipping on the edges and dusting of the lower part.
