About product

Quickwheel 1:35 M3 Grant, Lee and M31 — road wheel masks for the Takom kits

A masking set for painting the road wheels of the American M3 medium tanks in the British Grant form, the American Lee form and their M31 recovery version, 1:35 scale. It is not a model: the masks stick onto finished wheels and separate the rubber from the rim. The set is cut for the kits of these machines from Takom.

What makes the running gear of the M3 special

The M3 family rides on VVSS vertical volute springing, which makes painting the wheels the most laborious part of the whole build. The running gear consists of three bogies on each side, and in each bogie are two road wheels with a rubber tire band, so six wheels come to a side and twelve to the whole model. Above each bogie sits a return roller as well, which has a rubber running surface of its own and tends to be overlooked when painting, although it is as clearly visible from the side as the wheels below it. The drive sprocket at the front is toothed and has no rubber. The M31 recovery vehicle shares the same chassis, only with a different superstructure. The combination of many small, identically shaped discs means that lining by hand comes out slightly differently every time — and it is precisely this mismatch that shows best on a model with VVSS.

Choosing and preparing the paint

The chassis of the M3 is most often painted over a light olive base, and that is treacherous for a dark rubber shade. Gray and black pigments do not cover over light green in one coat, and the second coat is often laid on too thickly to catch up. Work the other way round: thin the paint and count on three or four passes, letting the surface really dry between them. The base under the mask has to be matured, or the mask will tear the olive paint away too when it is lifted off. Choose a rubber shade toward a cool gray rather than brown, because with twelve discs side by side every warm tone looks like rust. Finish matte and do not concern yourself with shine on VVSS at all.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of American and British Second World War equipment in 1:35 scale
  • Builders who do not fancy lining twelve identical wheels by hand
  • Those building the M31 recovery vehicle who want the chassis to match the fighting versions
  • Anyone interested in VVSS springing and its characteristic bogies

This is a masking set, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

VVSS springing has three bogies of two wheels on each side. Twelve identically shaped discs side by side give away at once every deviation in rubber width that lining by hand brings.

The name of the set gives all three subjects. They share the same chassis and differ mainly in their superstructure. The set is cut for the treatment from Takom.

A dark shade does not cover over light green in one coat. Thin the paint and lay on three or four passes with proper pauses to dry, so the mask does not tear the base away when lifted.

That is not stated here. The rollers above the bogies have a rubber running surface of their own, so plan their painting separately.
