About product

Photo-etched fenders NM-116 in 1:35 scale from Voyager Model

This item is not a kit but a small photo-etched add-on set aimed at the fenders. The brass parts will replace, on a plastic model you already own, fenders that in injection-molded plastic are always disproportionately thick. Voyager Model is a Chinese manufacturer of photo-etched aftermarket sets for military subjects in 1:35 scale. The parts are developed for the AFV Club 35S82 kit.

The real subject

The NM-116 came about in Norway through an upgrade of the American M24 Chaffee light tank. The vehicle received diesel power, a revised transmission and a 90 mm gun, and it served in the anti-tank role in demanding Nordic terrain. On light tanks the fenders were thin sheet-metal parts carried on brackets, often bent or marked by use on vehicles in service. It is precisely such features that gain most visually from photo-etched parts against plastic.

Tips on the flatness of long parts

A fender is a long narrow sheet and every irregularity shows on a model. Once it is cut out, lay the part on glass and check against the light whether it fails to seat anywhere, and carefully straighten any ripple by running smooth round stock over it. When gluing, work from one end: apply the cyanoacrylate to a short stretch of the edge only, straighten the part and hold it, and only then carry on. It can be held with a clothes peg with a soft pad under it, or with a rubber band over the hull. Flooding the whole edge with glue in one go almost always ends with the part glued on crooked.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Norwegian and postwar Nordic subjects in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who want fenders thin to scale
  • Adding one prominent detail to a model with a set modest in scope
  • More experienced builders with the basic equipment for photo-etched parts

The set holds photo-etched parts, not a plastic kit. The glue, paints, tools and the base model are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. This is a photo-etched add-on set of fenders for a plastic kit you already own.

The two sets aim at different parts of the vehicle, so combining them is usual. Compare any overlap of parts against the instructions for both sets.

Check the part against the light on glass, straighten any ripple with round stock and glue it gradually along short stretches of the edge.

The set is small and easy to follow, so it suits a first acquaintance with photo-etched parts. Accuracy when gluing is still necessary, though.
