A set of resin figures in 1:35 scale from Rado Miniatures, from the Move, Jerry! range. According to the name it holds a pair of figures that together make one scene: a British soldier and a captured German tank crewman, in the period from 1944 to 1945. The word Jerry was a period British slang term for a German soldier. It is not a vehicle model but a ready-made subject for a vignette.
Multi-figure sets fall into two kinds. Some are a collection of separate figures that can be placed as you like. Others are conceived as a scene, where one figure makes no sense without the other, and that is exactly the case here. The relationship between the figures carries the whole story, so the builder does not have to invent a composition from scratch. A practical advantage is the color contrast: two different uniforms side by side differ in tone as well as in cut, and the tanker's clothing in particular is cut quite differently from an infantryman's. The scene therefore stands up to close viewing even without a vehicle; a small base with a stretch of road and low undergrowth is enough.
Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw and sand wet with respiratory protection. Before you glue the figures, set them out on the base dry and look for the distance at which the scene works: too far apart and the relationship between them disappears, too close and the figures visually merge. Paint them separately and place them on the base only when they are finished. At the end, tie both uniforms together with the same glaze of dust on the footwear and the lower part of the trousers, so that they look as though they are standing in the same ground. Leave the faces for last and work on them in good light, as expression counts for a great deal in a two-figure scene.
