A window is a trickier element in a diorama than the hardware standing in front of it. It is not an ornament on a wall but a hole into another space, and the eye finds it before anything else. The moment a facade in 1:35 scale gets a real opening with a frame and glass, it stops being scenery and starts behaving like a building that has an inside.
The package carries three complete window assemblies cast in resin and with them a clear film from which the glazing is cut. The parts of the frame and of the sash are separate, so the position of the sash is a matter of decision: a closed window keeps a facade calm, one ajar suggests that somebody is inside, and one torn off its hinges says more about a hit than a heap of rubble beneath it.
Three windows tempt one to arrange them in a regular row. The opposite tends to be more effective: leave one of them visibly different from the other two. The eye reads regularity as a pattern and skips over it, whereas a deviation stops it exactly where the center of gravity of the scene should be.
The castings are separated from the casting blocks with a saw and by sanding, and it is advisable to degrease the mating surfaces before gluing. The connection with the surrounding wall is made with modeling putty, which at the same time masks the seam between the resin and the base. The film is glued in only after the frame is painted, or thinner will fog it. Paints, building materials and the building itself are not part of the package.
The enclosed film has to be cut with a sharp knife along a ruler. Cutting it with scissors waves the edge, and a wave is clearly visible in a glazed frame.
