The subject of this item is the study designated W1466 in the design documentation: a reworked Panzer IV in the Ausf.H version with sloped armor plates on the hull and the turret. Please check the number of parts, whether etched accessories are included, the type of tracks and the number of decal schemes against the packaging and the enclosed instructions.
The Panzer IV was a medium tank built in large batches, whose hull and turret were based on vertical armor plates. Combat experience showed that sloped armor raises the effective thickness and the likelihood of a round deflecting without the weight going up. The design office therefore worked up studies of how to carry sloping armor over to the established chassis. The W1466 design is among them: it stayed at the drawing and project stage and never saw series production. The kit therefore captures a project form, not a machine that was committed to action.
Assemble the running gear and let it set before you close the hull — after that the alignment of the wheels can no longer be corrected. On this subject the sloped armor faces are the main area on view, so it pays to retouch the parting seams and all the molding marks carefully. Lay the base coat on in thin layers, so that the engraved detail is preserved. On large sloped faces a gentle lightening of the middle of the surface works well, with a darker wash into the seams. Build the dust and mud effects from the bottom, strongest around the running gear and the fenders.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
