The Pz.Kpfw. VIII Maus in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter is an extensive plastic kit of the German superheavy tank with detailed interior fittings in both the hull and the turret.

An injection-molded plastic kit from the Chinese manufacturer Trumpeter, released in 2018 as a new mold. It is among the most extensive offerings of its kind in 1:35 scale, because besides the exterior it also holds the interior fittings, that is the hull and turret compartments. Besides the plastic sprues the package holds photo-etched parts and decal sheets. The finished model is genuinely large even in 1:35 scale, its length coming close to thirty centimeters, which is worth allowing for when planning a display case.
The Maus was a German superheavy tank developed at the end of the Second World War as the extreme outcome of the drive for the strongest possible armor protection. Its combat weight was around one hundred and eighty tons, which makes it the heaviest tank ever to reach the stage of a running prototype. The main armament was a 128 mm gun supported by a coaxial 75 mm gun, and the armor reached extraordinary values at its thickest points. The drive was electric: an internal combustion engine drove a generator and that supplied current to traction motors, because a conventional mechanical transmission would not have coped with such a weight. The machine never reached series production or combat service; it stopped at two vehicles built and the project ended with the end of the war.
Work from the interior: finish and paint the hull and turret compartments before you close the box up, because once it is glued there is no getting inside. With the running gear it pays to check the alignment and let the whole assembly cure properly, otherwise the model will not sit level. Glue the plastic with a thin cement by capillary action and the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate. Apply a base coat before painting, as large smooth surfaces are merciless to small scratches. For the final weathering on such an extensive surface, filters and soft transitions of shade pay off, otherwise the model reads as flat. Apply the decals over a gloss intermediate coat and seal them with a matte one.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
