About product

Soviet 122 mm D-30 howitzer - late version 1:35 (Trumpeter)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the towed 122 mm D-30 howitzer in the late form, 1:35 scale, made by Trumpeter. The set contains photo-etched parts and captures the characteristic three-leg carriage that gives the gun all-round traverse. The late version can be told by its two-chamber muzzle brake and its modified central firing base plate.

The real subject

The D-30 (army index 2A18) is a Soviet towed 122 mm howitzer taken into service in the 1960s. Its exceptional three-leg carriage spreads out to the sides when firing and allows the barrel to be turned a full 360 degrees. For transport the legs are folded together and the gun is towed by the barrel. Thanks to its reliability and simplicity it spread to dozens of armies around the world and is still in use today.

Building and painting tips

Give attention to the mechanism of the carriage and the barrel - once assembled, the gun can usually be arranged in the firing as well as the travel position. Use thin modeling cement on the plastic, prime the whole with primer and spray it with an airbrush. The gun tends to be in a uniform green shade, which you bring to life with a dark wash into the detail, edge highlighting and above all pigments and mud effects on the lower part of the carriage and the base plate. It looks good on a diorama with a crew.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Soviet and Cold War artillery
  • Modelers who want to add a towed gun to a diorama
  • Those interested in a movable carriage and barrel detail
  • More advanced beginners and experienced builders alike

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The late form has a two-chamber muzzle brake and a modified central base plate compared with the earlier type; otherwise it is the same proven system.

Yes, the three-leg carriage lets you show the gun spread out for firing with all-round traverse as well as folded for transport.

The basic set is focused on the gun itself; crew figures do not follow from the product name and we recommend checking the contents of the package.
