A set of masks for painting the road wheels of the Soviet SU-76M light self-propelled gun. It is an aid for painting, not a kit or a replacement part: on the wheel it separates the rubber tire band from the rim. The set is cut for the Tamiya kit.
The SU-76M stands on the lengthened chassis of a Soviet light tank, and that shows in the running gear at first glance. The wheels are small, sit tightly together and there are more of them on each side than the size of the vehicle would suggest; the drive sprocket is at the front and the upper run of the track is carried by small rollers. The fighting compartment is open at the rear and the hull is low, so a finished model seen from the side is made up of two bands in effect — a low hull and, below it, a densely set row of little wheels. On a small wheel the rubber tire band is a fairly wide ring in relation to the diameter, so the border between rubber and rim lies some way from the edge and lining it by hand shifts it inwards or outwards easily.
When the wheels are small and there are many of them, a single inaccuracy does not matter — what matters is that ten of them come together side by side. From a meter away the model then looks as though its running gear were out of focus, even when the rest of the vehicle is well handled. A mask unifies that work and the modeler can go straight to the more interesting part: to the dust and dried mud, which on light vehicles collects precisely between the wheels. In a competition case a legible, sharp running gear is more conspicuous on a small vehicle than on a large one, because the model is examined close up.
