An aid for painting, not a model. The templates mark out the rubber tire band of the road wheel so that it can be sprayed with a sharp and perfectly circular transition. The set is cut for the MiniArt kits.
The wheel of the T-54 is among the most recognizable in the whole field: a large disc with five pronounced cutouts arranged in a star and a wide rubber tire band around the circumference. There are five of them on each side, hung on torsion bars, and between the first and the second wheel a strikingly larger gap is left than between the rest — a characteristic feature worth checking during the build. There are no return rollers here; the upper run of the track bears directly on the wheels. For painting that brings one awkwardness you do not have with smooth wheels: the tire band border runs tightly around the star cutouts, so when lining by hand the line has to be not only circular but also equally distant from each of the five cutouts. The eye measures that relation at once and sees an irregularity even where it would pass on a smooth disc.
Given how many models from the T-54 family and its derivatives get built, this is one of the most widely usable items in the whole category — anyone building more than one Soviet postwar tank will find more use for it than for a one-off set for an exotic subject. The return is quickest on a model that stays relatively clean or only dusted. On a vehicle bound for a muddy diorama, by contrast, where half the wheel is lost under a deposit, an honest rubber tire band is work for nobody. Decide in advance, ideally before you glue the wheels on, because a finished running gear is markedly harder to mask.
