About product

Masking set for the road wheels of the T-55 and Type 69 II in 1:35 scale

A set of masks for painting the road wheels of the Soviet T-55 medium tank and its Chinese development, the Type 69 II. It is not a kit or a part; it is an aid that marks out the rubber tire band against the rim on the wheel. The set is cut for the Takom kits 2041, 2042, 2054 and 2055.

What makes the running gear of this family special

The running gear of the T-55 is among the most recognizable there is. There are five large road wheels on each side, the gap between the first and the second wheel is strikingly wide and the upper rollers are missing altogether — the track rides directly over the tops of the road wheels. The drive sprocket is at the rear, the idler wheel at the front. For the modeler that means two things. First, the wheels are genuinely large, so the rubber tire band forms a long arc and the rim offers a large area that can be shaded. Second, the upper part of the wheels is exposed and the track runs across it, so the rubber-to-rim border is visible from above as well, not only from the side. The Type 69 II shares the same running gear solution with the T-55, which is why the set is listed for both subjects.

Why the rubber-to-rim transition decides

It is with this family that the transition is most on show: large wheels with no upper rollers are practically unobscured from the side and create five distinct circles in one plane. When the border is sharp, the model on a shelf looks as though the wheels were standing on the track under their own weight; when it bleeds, the whole underside merges optically. In competition the T-55 tends to be a rewarding but also a much-built subject, so finished models are compared side by side — and a clean running gear is one of the few places where a lead can be gained without buying further parts.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of postwar Soviet and Chinese armored equipment in 1:35 scale.
  • For modelers building one of the Takom kits named.
  • For spraying large wheels with an airbrush in two shades.
  • For competition builds, where finished models of the same type are compared side by side.

This is a modeling accessory, not a kit. Paints, glue and the model itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

For the Takom kits with the designations 2041, 2042, 2054 and 2055. The masks need not fit models from other manufacturers.

The Type 69 II comes from the same design line and solves its running gear in the same way, so the wheels are comparable in shape.

The wheels are large, there is no upper roller above them and the track rides over their tops. The rubber-to-rim border is therefore visible from the side and from above.

No. It is an accessory for painting; the kit and the paints have to be bought separately.
