About product

Archer 1:35, markings for the M4 (early) tank Axis Poison, 6th Armored Division

A sheet of dry transfers in 1:35 scale with the markings for the American M4 medium tank in its early production form, specifically for the vehicle named Axis Poison of the 6th Armored Division. It is an accessory for a finished plastic model, not a kit or a set of parts. The exact breakdown of the motifs is stated on the box.

The real subject

The M4 Sherman was an American medium tank of the Second World War built in several production variants and at a number of plants. Early examples differed from later ones mainly in the construction of the hull, the arrangement of the vision ports and the driver's superstructures and in the road wheels used. Crews routinely gave their machines names of their own, which were painted on the sides of the hull or on the turret beside the tactical and registration markings; this custom is today one of the main clues for a modeler reconstructing a particular vehicle. The set covers this level of markings for one named machine.

Dry transfers are not soaked

The fundamental difference from ordinary decals: the sheet is not soaked off in water. Cut the motif out together with its carrier film, lay it face down on the model, hold it and burnish with a blunt point: a bone burnisher, a toothpick or a pencil without lead. The motif passes from the film onto the surface. Lift the film slowly and at an angle; if something has not transferred, put it back in the same position and burnish the spot again. The surface must be smooth, dry and well cured, ideally coated with gloss varnish. Once transferred, lettering on a tank looks as if it had been painted with a brush, with no edge of film, and that is exactly why dry transfers suit the names of vehicles. After sealing with matte varnish you can build weathering and chipping over the lettering.

Who the set is for

  • builders of American tanks of the Second World War in 1:35 scale
  • modelers who build a particular historical vehicle rather than a general type
  • those who want lettering with no visible edge of decal film
  • more experienced modelers, as a transfer goes on first time and without shifting

The set contains the markings only, not a model or parts. Check before you buy that the form of your model matches the early production version.
