About product

Basic photo-etched set 1:35 for the Valentine Mk.I (Voyager Model)

The product is an aftermarket set of photo-etched brass parts for detailing one particular plastic kit. The kit is not part of the package and you have to have it separately. The word basic in the name distinguishes the leaner variant from the full sets by the same manufacturer: basic sets hold fewer parts and concentrate on what is most visible on the finished model. Voyager Model is a Chinese manufacturer of photo-etched accessories for military subjects.

The real subject

The Valentine was a British infantry tank from the early 1940s, built around good armor protection and reliability at relatively small size. The Mk.I version carried a 40 mm gun in a two-man turret. The vehicle was built in many successive versions and in large numbers, including deliveries to foreign users. Characteristic are the low silhouette, the sectioned fenders and the riveted and cast features of the hull.

Order of work

With photo-etched sets it pays to proceed the other way round from what the kit instructions say. First go through which plastic parts will have to be sanded down or removed altogether, and do it before you glue anything together. Then fit the photo-etched parts onto the loose, still unassembled subassemblies, where you can reach them with tweezers from all sides. Only then close the model up. Adding photo-etched parts to a finished hull ends in broken parts and fingerprints in fresh paint.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts off with a scalpel on a hard surface, and make the bends on the marked groove in one stroke. Glue with thin cyanoacrylate in a minimal amount. Before painting, degrease the brass and cover it with a primer for metal. On British subjects of the period it pays to paint thinly, so that the fine edges of the photo-etched parts do not disappear under a heavy coat.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of British armor of the Second World War.
  • Modelers who want to try photo-etched parts on a smaller scope.
  • Anyone after a display-case model without a full multimedia extension.

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, which it does not include. The glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the leaner variant of a photo-etched set with a smaller scope, aimed at the most visible parts of the model. The full sets by the same manufacturer tend to cover more.

It is not. The product holds photo-etched brass parts only. The kit has to be obtained separately.

The AFV Club kit. The parts are etched to its dimensions.

On some of the parts, yes. It pays to establish that and do it before the subassemblies are put together rather than on a finished model.
