About product

1:35 Bergepanther with a mounted Pz.Kpfw. IV turret — photo-etched set from Voyager Model

A photo-etched detail set in 1:35 scale from the Chinese manufacturer Voyager Model for the unusual variant of the recovery vehicle built on the chassis of the Panther tank, onto which a turret from the Pz.Kpfw. IV medium tank was subsequently fitted. The set replaces thick plastic sheet and adds small external parts. The model is not part of the package and the Dragon 6340 kit has to be obtained separately.

The real subject

The Bergepanther was a recovery and towing machine derived from the chassis of the Panther tank, meant for hauling heavy vehicles off the battlefield. As standard it had an open superstructure with a winch and a bracing spade instead of a turret. The variant with a mounted Pz.Kpfw. IV turret came about by reworking particular examples, and it is attractive for modelers precisely because it joins two different machines into one unusual whole.

Building and painting tips

Photo-etched parts will take a far thinner coat of paint than plastic, and above all they need one. The basic rule runs: spray the primer for metal so lightly that it only takes the shine off the surface, and apply the paint in two or three translucent coats. A heavy coat rounds off the crisp edges you bought the photo-etched parts for. A shade looks darker on metal than on plastic, so once dry compare the two materials in daylight and, if need be, even the difference out with a light overspray in a lighter shade. Dry-brush with a minimum of paint, so that only the edges and the rivets come forward.

Who the set is for

  • builders of German engineer and recovery subjects in 1:35 scale
  • modelers drawn to unusual and improvised variants
  • more experienced builders with experience of painting photo-etched parts
  • dioramas on the theme of recovering and repairing vehicles

This is an add-on set, not a model. The plastic kit, glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is an add-on set of photo-etched parts for the Dragon 6340 kit, which has to be bought separately.

It was a recovery and towing machine on the chassis of the Panther tank, meant for hauling heavy vehicles. As standard it had an open superstructure with a winch.

As thinly as possible. The primer only takes the shine off the surface, and the paint goes on in two or three translucent coats. A heavy coat rounds the edges off and the detail disappears.

It is an ordinary optical effect caused by the substrate. Compare the two materials in daylight once dry and even the difference out with a light overspray in a lighter shade.
