About product

Basic photo-etched set 1:35 for the early-version Tiger II from Voyager Model

Voyager Model is among the most prolific makers of photo-etched parts for armor in 1:35 scale. This basic set is cut for the Takom 2096 plastic kit, that is for the early production version of the heavy tank, and concentrates on the external assemblies where the thickness of plastic is a nuisance. The model of the tank is not in the package.

The real subject

The Tiger II was a German heavy tank of the closing phase of the Second World War, combining steeply sloped frontal armor with a long-barreled 88 mm gun. Early examples differ from the later production run in the shape of the turret with the rounded front wall, a differently arranged commander's hatch and details on the hull. Given its weight, the vehicle was demanding on the drivetrain and on fuel consumption, its mobility and range were limited, and deployment was also complicated by the load capacity of bridges. For the modeler, though, it is a technically rewarding object, because the surface of the hull and the turret carries a great many small sheet-metal features, which come out noticeably better in photo-etched form.

Degreasing and priming

Brass leaves the factory with a thin layer of grease and oxides, on which paint does not hold and glue slips. So before spraying, wash the finished subassembly in warm water with a drop of dish soap, rinse it and let it dry freely, and from then on touch the parts only in gloves or with tweezers. Next comes a thin coat of primer meant for metal, ideally sprayed, because a brush clogs the detail in fine mesh. Only onto the primer does the covering coat go. Without this step the paint flakes off the photo-etched parts at the first handling and reveals shiny metal exactly where you do not want it.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German armor of the Second World War.
  • Modelers bothered by oversized plastic sheet and mesh.
  • Competition and display-case builds with the emphasis on surface detail.
  • More experienced builders equipped for working with photo-etched parts.

This is an add-on set, not a model. The basic plastic kit, the glue and the paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. These are purely photo-etched brass parts. The plastic kit has to be obtained separately.

Above all in the shape of the turret with the rounded front wall and in some details on the hull, compared with the later production run.

Degrease them in warm water with dish soap, let them dry and spray a thin coat of primer for metal. Otherwise the finish does not hold.

No. It is designed for the Takom 2096 kit; on other models it would call for modifications.
