An aftermarket accessory for builders of a model of the American battleship USS New York BB-34 in 1:350 scale. The veneer deck with pre-printed plank laying and an adhesive backing is glued over the plastic deck of the kit. It is therefore not a model of the ship but a part that goes into one; compatibility applies to the Trumpeter 05339 kit.
On a battleship the deck is full of obstacles: the barbettes of the gun turrets, the superstructure, hatches, winches and the bases of fittings. It is to these that the veneer is cut and it is going around them that decides the result. Work from the largest opening: seat the piece on the dominant barbette, check that it is in line with the details around it and only then glue the rest of the area down step by step. Small adjustments are easier while only part of the glued area is holding.
Always have a new blade, tweezers with fine tips and a soft roller or a smooth object for pressing ready. Where the veneer has to be trimmed, make the cut in two passes: the first stroke only marks the line, the second finishes it. A blunt blade tears the wood and the edge then frays. When you are done, go lightly over the edges with a sanding sponge and fix any raised fibers with a drop of thin varnish.
The accessory is supplied without the kit. Paints, glue and varnish are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
