About product

Radiakkapsel 1:48 - eight resin castings from Maestro Models

The set contains eight identical resin castings of a small carried pod, which in Swedish is called a radiakkapsel. It is not a model of an aircraft nor a kit, but an accessory for the stores. Eight pieces in the package matches the fact that these pods were commonly carried in larger numbers at once. Maestro Models is a Swedish brand focused on accessories for Scandinavian aircraft, that is, on exactly the details that ordinary kits lack.

The real subject

A radiakkapsel is a pod intended for measuring and taking samples when detecting radioactive contamination of the air. In Swedish practice it belonged to the equipment for so-called radiac reconnaissance, that is, flying into an area where the level of radioactivity had to be established, typically after nuclear tests during the Cold War. The pods were small and light, they were carried in series on ordinary pylons and after landing the values they had captured were evaluated. Precisely because they were used in numbers, a set with eight castings makes good sense for several models at once as well.

Building and painting tips

Small resin parts are easily lost, so prepare a mat with a raised edge for the work. Wash the castings in lukewarm water with dish soap because of the mold release agent, cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw and level the surface with a file. They are attached with cyanoacrylate glue. With parts this small it pays to paint them while they are still on the casting block or stuck on a toothpick and only then to settle them on the model - otherwise they are hard to hold and the paint rubs off from your fingers. Primer is a necessity here too.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Swedish aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want a less usual load instead of standard bombs and rocket pods
  • Those interested in Cold War equipment and reconnaissance gear
  • Modelers used to small resin parts and to working with cyanoacrylate glue

This is an accessory set, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A small carried pod of Swedish origin that served to measure and take samples when detecting radioactive contamination of the air. The set contains eight castings of this pod.

By the maker's range the set is intended for Swedish aircraft in 1:48 scale. Check the particular type and the arrangement on the pylons against a period photograph of the machine you are building.

The pods were commonly carried in larger numbers at once, so that one flight covered several measurements. The package matches that and will even equip two models.

Wash them free of mold release agent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and paint the parts before fitting them, ideally stuck on a toothpick. They are attached with cyanoacrylate glue.
