About product

Britten-Norman BN-2A Islander 1:48 (Valom, Belgian markings)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British twin-engine Britten-Norman BN-2A Islander utility aircraft in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer Valom. This boxing is devoted to machines operated in Belgium: the decals cover the markings of the Belgian Air Component of the armed forces and of civil aerial survey work. It is a short-run kit, which offers a less usual subject and calls for a more careful approach than the ordinary mass-produced models.

The real subject

The Islander is a light twin-engine high-wing aircraft with fixed landing gear, designed in the 1960s on the Isle of Wight. The aim was a simple, sturdy machine, cheap to operate and able to work from short, unpaved ground. The combination of low operating costs, easy maintenance and room for a pilot and several passengers made it one of the most successful European transport aircraft of its class. Besides regional airlines it is used by police, survey and army services all over the world, where it serves on liaison, observation and photographic flights.

Building and painting tips

With a short-run kit it pays to clean every part of the remains of sprue gates and flash first and to try all the main assemblies dry before any glue is applied. Use a thin cement for plastic, which wicks into the joint. The Islander has extensive cabin glazing, so mask the clear parts with tape or liquid mask and paint them only after the fit has been tried. The model has a markedly broken surface, so once it is varnished a fine panel wash helps to pick the joints out. Varnish the areas with gloss clear coat before the decals, and once they have dried unify the surface with a matte or semi-gloss varnish.

Who the model is for

  • modelers with experience of short-run kits
  • collectors of civil and utility aircraft in 1:48
  • anyone interested in Belgian military and civil aviation history
  • builders of unusual subjects outside the mainstream of fighters and bombers

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes, the basis is injection-molded plastic. It is a short-run tool, though, so the parts call for more careful cleaning and a dry fit tried beforehand.

Rather not. We recommend it to modelers who already have experience of short-run kits and of fine-tuning the fit.

The decals relate to Belgian machines, that is the military air component and civil aerial survey work.

Yes, glue, paints and varnishes are not included in the package. Masking tape for the extensive glazing is useful too.
